Cotuit Dominates Cape Stars , Maintains Hold Atop Rankings


The Cape Cod League’s Cotuit Kettleers have been the nation’s top summer college league team since the start of the season and eight Kettleers, including four of the nine Western Division starters, will be on display Saturday when the Cape Cod League stages its annual All-Star Game at Yarmouth-Dennis.


The Cotuit starters include first baseman Justin Smoak (South Carolina), second baseman Eric Farris (Loyola Marymount), shortstop Reese Havens (South Carolina) and outfielder Jeff Rea (Mississippi State ). Kettleer reserves include catcher Sean Gaston (Notre Dame) and righthanders Jay Brown (Young Harris , Ga. , JC), Cory Gearrin (Young Harris , Ga. , JC) and James Simmons (UC Riverside).


The Kettleers, coached by former North Carolina coach Mike Roberts, have dominated the Western Division standings from the outset, and had opened a seven-point lead on second-place Wareham .
