| Class of 2009 |
The annual Tournament of Stars took place at the USA Baseball national training
center in Cary, N.C., from June 17-22, and attracted many of the top prospects
in the 2009 high school class. It came right on the heels of the Perfect Game
National Showcase the previous weekend at the Metrodome in Minneapolis. Many of
the same players attended both events.
Officially, the Tournament of Stars served as a tryout for the U.S. junior
national team that will participate in the World Junior Championship in
Edmonton from July 25-Aug. 3. A total of 34 players, plus 13 alternates, were
selected to participate in the national team trials in Phoenix from July 10-17. |

Pitching Prevails for Braves
Scout Team
JUPITER, Fla.—It was obvious that the Atlanta Braves Scout Team had winning a
championship in mind when they showed up at the World Wood Bat Association Fall
Championship with a roster that included 17 pitchers.
The Braves knew they’d need a deep pitching staff to win the 80-team event and,
sure enough, they had three fresh arms on the mound with the title on the line
as they defeated the Orlando Scorpions 4-3 here Monday behind the combined
pitching of lefthander Austin Wright (Conant HS, Schaumburg, Ill.), righthander
Austin Wood (Niceville, Fla. HS) and Blake Dieterich (West Orange HS, Orlando).
It was the Braves fifth win in 24 hours—and their eighth in four days. Yet no
Braves pitcher worked in more than six innings in the tournament.

| World Wood Bat Association Underclass Championship |
| By David Rawnsley |
The World Wood Bat Association Underclass Championship,
played Oct. 5-8 in Fort Myers, Fla., is a great event because it’s an
opportunity to see so many talented young players for the first time. As a
scout at this level, your mind is full of 2008 prospects and rightfully so, as
we still have to follow them through next June’s draft.
But the rising juniors (Class of 2009) and sophomores (Class of 2010) that made
up most of the rosters for the World Underclass Championship are just starting
to emerge and it’s always amazing to watch first hand how talented some of the
players are already. |

| Perfect Game Aflac Showcase - Player Reports |
| Over the past few years Perfect Game has held a workout and
game for other top players during the Aflac Classic. The reason for this event
is the number of highest level scouts and college recruiters who attend the
Aflac Classic didn’t have anything to do during the afternoons. The Aflac Teams
worked out in the mornings and left for other activities in the afternoon. This
event gave the scouts and recruiters a chance to see other highest level
players. So while the event is all about the players the reason for doing it is
all about the scouts. |

| Aflac Players Making It Big |
| In August of 2004, Justin Upton was named the winner of the
Jackie Robinson award as the top high school player in his class. Then he
became the first overall pick of the 2005 draft by the Diamondbacks. The night
of the Aflac Banquet, exactly three years to the day later, Justin Upton almost
hit for the cycle against the Dodgers in LA. |

The 2006 class of Aflac All Americans have all either
signed with Major League clubs or decided to attend top college programs. The
last day to sign was yesterday August 15th.
This year, former Aflac All Americans received over $23 million in signing
bonuses from various major league organizations. The largest bonus ever was
received by former Aflac All American and Jackie Robinson award winner, Justin
Upton (the first overall pick) a couple years ago, when the Diamondbacks paid
him $6.1 million to start his pro career. |

A few thoughts from the 2007 Aflac All American Classic
Jack Armstrong was the winning pitcher for the East as he struck out the final
two West hitters leaving the tying run stranded in scoring position. After the
game, a happy Armstrong said "This is the greatest event I’ve ever been to."
That same quote was repeated by many during the post game ceremonies. Clark
Murphy told Perfect Game officials "Thank you for selecting me, this is the
most fun I’ve ever had in baseball." Destin Hood, co-champion in the Homerun
Derby, said "This was great, unbelievable, I had so much fun." |

| 2007 PG NATIONAL SHOWCASE |
| PG National Sets Impressive Tone For 2008 |
| By Allan Simpson |
The sun had barely set on the 2007 draft, but the Atlanta
Braves scouting staff was there in full force a week later at the University of
Cincinnati for Perfect Game’s National Showcase—unofficially the first event of
the 2008 scouting season. More than any other big league club, the Braves
believe it’s never too early to get a handle on the high school talent in the
next year’s draft.
“Believe me,” Braves scouting director Roy Clark said, “the last thing I wanted
to do was put our guys through 16-hour days in 95 degree heat so soon after the
draft, especially with Father’s Day to factor in, but this event is invaluable
to how we approach the draft as an organization.

| Top 84 Prospects |

| The annual East Coast Professional Baseball Showcase—the
East Coast equivalent of California’s Area Code Games—was moved from
Wilmington, N.C., to Lakeland, Fla., this year. It attracted about 150 of the
elite rising high school seniors from the eastern half of the country, along
with about 500 major league scouts and college recruiters.

| AREA CODE GAMES |
| Top 50 Pitchers |
| By Blaine Clemmens |
Following are the top 50 pitchers in attendance (and seen
performing) at the 2007 Area Code Games, as determined by the Perfect Game
scouting staff. There was consideration given to raw stuff, future
projectability, present-day ability, pitchability, performance… . . . all of
it. This does not exactly reflect the way we would slot them if this were a
draft projection.
All pitchers are in the high school draft class of 2008, unless otherwise
noted. Most of the heights and weights below are taken from the SPARQ ratings
and may be different from their listed heights and weights that were in the
event program. Not every player had a SPARQ tested height and weight.

| 2007 National Championships Overview |
| By David Rawnsley |
July is National Age Group Championship Month for the WWBA
and Perfect Game. Week long tournaments to crown national champions in the
2010/15U through 2007/18U age groups will kick off July 3-9 in Marietta,
Georgia with the 2007/18U event and move down the age group scale to finish
with the 2010/15U championship July 23-28.
This year’s 18U and 17U events will feature what is believed to be the largest
pool of teams ever brought to one site for a national championship, with 152
teams from across the country competing for the respective championships. With
that kind of quantity and cross section of the country, it’s guaranteed that
the quality of competition and prospects will be at an all time high.
