Perfect Game Aflac Showcase - Player Report 4

Thomas Lemke, 6-7/195, R/R, Northwest Christian,Phoenix, AZ

Summer Team - Scottsdale Storm Elite

Aflac Report: August 31st, 2007

Lemke is a 6-7/195 RHP who lists his best tool as fastball.  He does have an outstanding live heater at 90 mph in San Diego .  However, the fastball is just the starting point.  He has both a good curve ball and a good slider.  He throws all three pitches where he wants with a very quick and long arm action.  He's deceptive with a lot of arms and legs and comes at hitters slightly across his body.  Scouts are going to absolutely love this kid.  This is a real "sky is the limit" talent who is going to be very well known on a national level by the time he is done with high school.  Projection is completely off the charts.  One of the more interesting prospects we have seen all year.  Lemke is also a top level student.

Christopher Jenkins, 6-6/225, R/R, Westfield , Westfield, NJ

Summer Team - Diamond Jacks

Aflac Report: August 31st, 2007

Jenkins is a big 6-6/225 RHP who was the hardest thrower at this event in San Diego .  He topped out at 93 but threw 92 a bunch.  He showed a long loose arm that was very quick.  He just loads up and fires with good command of his heater and an equally impressive mid 80s slider.  There's some "WOW" factor here, this is a big time guy!  Christopher Jenkins, you can call him Chris, is going to be a household name at MLB scouting departments.  It's hard to thnk he's a 2009 grad.  Will he get even bigger and stronger? Will he throw 100+ mph? Not sure, but it's a definite maybe. He looks like a big leaguer when he takes the mound right now.  He ranks right up there with the best pitching prospects as HS sophomores we have ever seen over the years. Jenkins is also a very good student.

Matthew Conway, 6-6/230, R/L. Brother Rice, Birmingham, MI

Summer Team - MI Chargers/South FL Bandits

Aflac Report: August 31st, 2007

Conway is a very large but athletic 6-6/230 LHP/1B who showed well in San Diego .  He is listed as a LHP first and he is very interesting as such.  He can pitch, but he's a bit more of a finesse type at this time.  His low 80s fastball will get much better and he throws three pitches for strikes.  He is an intimidating guy on the mound.  In San Diego he showed us something even more interesting.  Conway can hit and he can hit good pitching.  He creates serious bat speed and shows big power potential.  He got three hits and drove in three runs in the game.  In fact, he might have been named the MVP of that game if we had one. Time will tell as to which way he develops the most, but that bat created some interest in San Diego .  If the velocity doesn't increase, the bat should still keep him on all the follow lists.

Zack Wheeler, 6-4/175, L/R, East Paulding, Dallas, GA

Summer Team - East Cobb Astros

Aflac Report: August 31st, 2007

Wheeler is a super projectable 6-4/175 RHP with a magical arm.  He put on quite a display in San Diego .  His arm works fairly effortlessly on his 89-92 mph fastball.  His pitches leave his hand cleanly and just explode at the plate.  He has three quality pitches that should all end up in the plus range before he is a senior in high school.  He repeats his delivery well and shows good command.  Wheeler at the 200+ pounds he will end up is a very scary thought.  He's a kid that will move way up in all rankings lists of 09 prospects and before he's done he could be right up near the top.  Zach Wheeler is going to be followed closely by Major League scouts right up until the 2009 draft.  He can name his college because they will all want him.

Drew VerHagen, 6-4/195, R/R, Heath, Rockwall, TX

Summer Team - Dallas Tigers

Aflac Report: August 31st, 2007

VerHagen is a well put together 6-4/195 RHP who shows athleticism.  He was a definite highlight in San Diego .  He worked fast striking out the side in his first inning K K K.  His arm is very fast and he throws slightly cross body.  His 89 mph fastball has plus life and sink.  His 78 mph breaking ball shows 2 plane action and it's a good one.  He also flashed a nice change, though we'd like to see a bit more velocity on that pitch.  Great body, athletic, great arm, good stuff, good command, and an outstanding student.  There were some high level college coaches who thought he was the best guy there.  For sure there were a lot of good ones there and he was one of them. Oh, he can hit too.
