Rawlings and Perfect Game USA Announce
Preseason All-American and All-Region Teams
Annual awards recognize the top senior athletes at the
high school level. |
ST. LOUIS, Mo. (March 18, 2008) - Rawlings Sporting Goods® announced today its annual
Rawlings Preseason All-American and All-Region Teams to recognize the top 400 high
school baseball athletes in the U.S., while also showcasing their abilities to collegiate
and professional scouts. In partnership with Perfect Game USA, the world’s largest
scouting report service, Rawlings is devoted to distinguishing “THE FINEST IN THE
FIELD” with the these two prestigious awards.
Mike Thompson, Rawlings Vice-President, said, “These selected athletes are being
recognized for their skill, athleticism, and dedication to their game which allows
them to perform to the highest level of game play. With more than 240,000 high school
athletes in the nation, these players represent the very best in their class.” |

Danny Coulombe: An Arizona Pitcher to Watch |
|
by Jim McDonald |
This is all you need to know about Danny Coulombe: Anytime he pitches, Scottsdale
Chaparral has a chance to win. A great chance. This year, Coulombe has been virtually
unhittable. So far, he is 7-0 for the 18-6 Firebirds with an earned run average
under 0.7 and an amazing 109 strikeouts in 51 innings pitched. He has walked just
11. On April 22 in a 9-1, one-hit victory over Phoenix Paradise Valley he struck
out 20 of a possible 22 hitters (one reached base on a dropped third strike).
It might be the most dominant pitching performance over an extended period in the
storied history of Chaparral baseball, a program that has produced Paul Konerko
of the Chicago White Sox and Brian Bannister of the Kansas City Royals. Chaparral,
frequently ranked in the nation’s top 20 high school programs, also has sent Charles
Brewer to UCLA and Ike Davis and Jason Jarvis to Arizona State, among others.

Tyler Chatwood: All Over The Field |
|
by David Rawnsley |
The high school class of 2008 is unusually full of extremely-talented two-way players.
The list starts with first-round talents such as OF-RHP Aaron Hicks (Woodrow Wilson
HS, Long Beach, CA), RHP-3B Tim Melville (Wentzville Holt HS, Wentzville, Mo.) and
3B-RHP Ethan Martin (LaGrange, Ga., HS) and goes deep into the prospects lists.
Maybe the most versatile talent in the 2008 class, though, is a player that you
might as well call a four-way player. That would be SS-CF-C-RHP Tyler Chatwood of
Redlands East Valley High in Yucaipa, Calif.

Florida, Nevada Schools Set the Tone
With the 2008 high school baseball season starting to wind down, it looks as if
Florida’s No. 1-ranked American Heritage High (31-2) and Nevada’s No. 2 Bishop Gorman
High (41-3) will finish the year at the top of the PG Crosschecker Top 50 High School rankings,
with both schools claiming state championships. The two teams began the year ranked
1-2.
The next three spots in the latest PG Crosschecker rankings all stayed the same
with New Jersey’s Don Bosco Prep (26-0), Florida’s Lake Brantley (30-4) and Texas’
Plano West (36-1) rounding out the Top 5.

Preseason Top 100 Teams (with team previews) |
|
By Jeff Simpson |
1. AMERICAN HERITAGE HS, Plantation, Fla. (23-6)
American Heritage High is a clear-cut choice as the nation’s No. 1 high school team.
In fact, it may arguably have the greatest collection of talent on one high school
team in the last decade—or at least since a Seminole (Fla.) High that featured first
baseman Casey Kotchman went wire-to-wire in 2001, winning 31 straight games.
The Patriots are loaded at virtually every position and feature a pair of Aflac
All-Americans in senior 1B-LHP Eric Hosmer and senior C Adrian Nieto. Hosmer (.380,
10 HR), an Arizona State recruit, is the nation’s top-ranked prep hitting prospect
and almost a cinch to be drafted in the first round in June. Nieto (.376-5-18),
one of the top catching prospects in the country and a South Florida recruit, is
also a target in the early rounds of this year’s draft. |
