There isn’t a college team in the country that has impacted the baseball draft the last three years quite like Vanderbilt, which produced the No. 1 overall pick in 2007 (LHP David Price), the eighth pick that year (RHP Casey Weathers), the No. 2 overall pick in 2008 (3B Pedro Alvarez) and the seventh pick a year ago (LHP Mike Minor).

Max Kepler has been surprised every step of the way. He was surprised when professional baseball scouts began paying attention to him when he was 14 years old and living in Germany. And he was very surprised last summer when the Minnesota Twins signed him as a European free agent when he was 16 years old and gave him an $800,000 bonus.

Though the college players on the accompanying list have yet to play their first game at the college level, and the high school players their first game of their sophomore season, here's our first take on the top prospects in the 2012 draft class. Stanford freshman infielder Kenny Diekroeger was the fifth-highest unsigned pick in last year's draft, but ranks No. 1 overall on this list as all those selected ahead of him that are presently enrolled in college are not members of the 2012 class. While there are still plenty of unsigned free agents available on the open market, only two of those unsigned players could affect the draft order: Toronto catcher Rod Barajas and St. Louis right-handed pitcher Joel Pineiro. Clearly teams are showing more patience and prudence during difficult economic times. They’re waiting out players, knowing the longer they wait, the more cost-effective the remaining available players will be.

Big-league clubs generally convene their area scouts for pre-draft meetings in January to formulate follow lists for the coming college and high-school seasons. Assembling some sort of a priority ranking of elite talent in the traditional hotbeds is generally a relatively easy exercise, but lining up the best college talent in Florida this year may be a bit more challenging.

Scouting directors follow free agent season a little differently than a typical baseball fan. Their interest in who their team adds and subtracts goes beyond the major league roster. Ever since 1978, draft picks have been awarded as compensation for losing top free agents. To a scouting director, there’s nothing better than gaining a horde of first-round choices.
