Little changed at the top of the college baseball rankings this week with Pac-10
rivals Arizona and Arizona State holding on to the top two spots. The Wildcats
swept Sacramento State, while the Sun Devils had little problem handling the
competition at the Coca-Cola Classic in nearby Surprise, Ariz.
Texas was the only team in the Top 10 that essentially moved in the rankings,
falling three spots from third to sixth. The Longhorns dropped games to
Tennessee and Rice at the Minute Maid Classic, played at Minute Maid Park in
Houston. Rice was the most impressive team at the event, winning games over
Texas, Texas Tech and Oklahoma. After dropping its opening series to Long Beach
State, the Owls reeled off five wins in the second week of the season to
improve to No. 17.
In a big ACC/SEC match-up, Florida State swept four straight from Auburn. The
No. 9 Seminoles are off to their usual strong start, hitting .364 as a team
with senior 1B Dennis Guinn (.480-4-12) leading the way. Another ACC/SEC
showdown pitted bitter in-state rivals South Carolina and Clemson against each
other. The No. 4 Gamecocks had little trouble in sweeping No. 25 Clemson,
outscoring the Tigers 15-2 over the two-game set. Junior SS Reese Havens has
started off the year very hot, hitting .500 (12-24) with four home runs and 15
RBIs.

State, following up a series win over Rice to start the year. Pitching is again
a strong point for the 49ers who have an overall team ERA of 2.01. Senior RHP
Andrew Liebel is leading the pitching staff so far, not allowing an earned run
in 15 innings while striking out 22 and walking only two.
Four new teams entered the rankings this week: Central Florida, Nebraska,
Washington State and Charlotte. Central Florida is off to a school-best 7-0
start after sweeping Central Michigan over the weekend and picking up a big win
over Missouri in mid-week action.
Nebraska completed a very impressive four-game sweep over UC Riverside, which
dropped six straight games during the week. Along with UC Riverside,
Louisiana-Lafayette, East Carolina and Louisiana Tech fell out of the rankings.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Sawyer Carroll, Kentucky. The senior right fielder
had a monster week for the Wildcats, who improved to 9-0 on the year. Carroll
went 14-for-21 (.667) with four home runs and 17 RBIs. With home runs in four
consecutive games, Carroll set a school record for consecutive games with a
homerun. Carroll, who hit only three homers in 2007, is now batting .600
(18-for-30) with five homers and 23 RBIs, while drawing 10 walks.

dominating in a 4-0 victory over San Francisco on Friday. Gorgen threw a
complete-game shutout, allowing only one hit, while striking out 12 and walking
one. He worked to two batters over the minimum and retired 19 straight hitters
at one point. Gorgen improved to 2-0 on the year. He has allowed two hits in 15
