This year’s draft is scheduled for June 9-11—the latest in the draft’s 44 year history—but it still won’t be late enough for two top prospects in the 2009 class to play another game this season before their name is called.

Auburn junior third baseman Joseph Sanders, tied for second in the NCAA Division I ranks with 18 home runs, will be sidelined the remainder of the season after being hit in the face by a high and tight fastball in the Tigers 8-2 loss to Samford on Tuesday. He was scheduled to undergo surgery Wednesday to repair a broken jaw.

California high-school righthander Chad Thompson (El Toro High, Trabuco Canyon) was advised Wednesday that he will have to undergo Tommy John surgery on his pitching elbow. The surgery is scheduled for May 1, and will sideline the 6-foot-8 Arizona State recruit for several months.

Sanders was expected to be a third- or fourth-round pick in this year’s draft, while Thompson had expectations of going as high as the second round. It remains to be seen how their injuries will impact their draft status.
